It was 2013, and we were your typical, 30-something American couple.  In respectable, 9-to-5 desk jobs, we were climbing the professional ladder, saving for a house, and talking about starting a family.

Instead, we quit our jobs, put everything into storage, and left our home in Washington, DC, for a year-long journey through SE Asia and beyond in search of adventure, personal fulfillment, and good eats.

After 23 countries, we returned to the States and settled in Portland, OR, where we’re busy planning our next adventure – exploring the Wild West!

Courtney

Courtney was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV, where she grew up in suburban bliss with her mom, dad, and two younger sisters.  While many little girls could be found having tea parties at home, Courtney and her sisters could often be found hanging off of a rock wall or playing in a creek, Barbie dolls in tow.  These early adventures camping, hiking, climbing, skiing, biking, canoeing, and exploring the western United States ignited a lifelong passion for travel and discovery in Courtney.

She attended the University of Washington in Seattle, enjoying every moment of Pacific NW life (even the rain), and earning a semi-useless degree in political science.  A youthful and foolish dalliance in politics brought her to DC, where she soon fell in love with and married fellow adventurer H.J.  They dreamed of traveling the world, though it would be four years before it came to pass.

Courtney’s obsessions include travel, food, writing, and the outdoors.  She currently works for a DC-based non-profit and is a freelance travel and food writer.  Contact her here!

H.J.

H.J. was born in Chattanooga, TN, and grew up all over the US with his parents, older sister, and, much to his chagrin, no pets.

Despite his semi-nomadic childhood, he was raised a Southern gentleman and considers Charlottesville, VA, home.  After an unhappy stint in engineering school on the East Coast, he set off for a semester at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and ended up staying for two and half years, picking up a BA, photography skills, and a taste for adventure.  Doing his best to ignore the call of the open road, he moved to Washington, DC, and got a “real” job working as a policy wonk at the U.S. Senate.

By now, you know he found a kindred spirit in Courtney, and the rest is history.  H.J. is a freelance travel, adventure, and landscape photographer and is always looking for any excuse to ride a motorcycle.  Contact him here!
