It was 2013, and we were your typical, 30-something American couple.  In respectable, 9-to-5 desk jobs, we were climbing the professional ladder, saving for a house, and talking about starting a family.

Instead, we quit our jobs, put everything into storage, and left our home in Washington, DC, in search of adventure, personal fulfillment and good eats.  We are currently on a year+ journey through SE Asia and beyond.

Courtney was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV, where she grew up in suburban bliss with her mom, dad, and two younger sisters.  When many little girls could be found having tea parties at home, Courtney and her sisters could often be found hanging off of a rock wall or playing in a creek, often with Barbie dolls in tow.  These early adventures camping, hiking, climbing, skiing, biking, canoeing, and exploring the western United States ignited a lifelong passion for travel and discovery in Courtney.  She attended the University of Washington in Seattle, enjoying every moment of Pacific NW life (even the rain), and earned a useless degree in political science.  A youthful and foolish dalliance in politics brought her to DC, where she soon fell in love with and married fellow adventurer H.J.  They immediately began plotting their escape from the “real world”, though it would be four years before it came to pass.  In a former life, she was a U.S. Senate staffer, manager of external and government relations, non-profit fundraiser, and event planner.  She is currently a world traveler, writer, and food fanatic.

H.J. was born in Chattanooga, TN, and grew up all over the US with his parents, older sister, and, much to his chagrin, no pets.  Despite his semi-nomadic childhood, he was raised a Southern gentleman and considers Charlottesville, VA, home.  After an unhappy stint in engineering school on the East Coast, he set off for a semester at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and ended up staying for two and half years, picking up a BA, photography skills, and a taste for adventure.  Doing his best to ignore the call of the open road, he moved to Washington, DC, and got a “real” job working as a policy wonk at the U.S. Senate.  By now, you know he found a kindred spirit in Courtney, and they began dreaming of a life of true adventure together.  H.J. is currently a world traveler and photographer and is always looking for any excuse to ride a motorcycle.
